Young people in Wasai, a community in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region, are calling on the government to prioritize development in their area.
The youth have expressed frustration over the lack of basic social amenities, employment opportunities, and essential infrastructure, which they say are limiting their quality of life.
Speaking to the media, several young residents lamented the slow pace of development and its impact on their future.
Wasinbensu Abdul Wasiu, one of the concerned youth, noted that many young people in Wasai are considering relocating to other towns in search of better opportunities.
“We want to live happy and fulfilled lives just like other youth in Ghana, but the situation here makes that almost impossible,” Mr. Wasiu stated.
“Farmers are struggling due to lack of inputs and access to tractors, and our roads are in terrible condition.”
Torra Balubuo Samuel, another resident, echoed the concerns, highlighting the growing issue of youth unemployment. He revealed that many graduates from Wasai have been forced to return to subsistence farming due to the absence of job openings.
“There are no jobs here for the youth. Many of us studied hard with the hope of securing meaningful employment, but that dream remains out of reach,” Mr. Samuel said. He also criticized what he described as the politicization of job recruitment processes, arguing that only individuals with political connections seem to benefit.
Adding to the calls for action, Abdul Rahman Dauda Kuntulo, speaking on behalf of the chief of Wasai, Kuoro Alhaji Abu Kuntulo Dinbon II, appealed to the government to rehabilitate the community’s deteriorating road network.
He stressed that improved roads would not only boost the local economy but also open up new opportunities for young people.
“The state of our roads is a major setback to development. Fixing them would greatly enhance mobility, trade, and access to services,” Mr. Kuntulo said.
The youth of Wasai are urging the government and development partners to take their concerns seriously and implement tangible interventions that will bring lasting change to their community.
They believe that investment in infrastructure, agriculture, and job creation will transform Wasai into a vibrant and thriving area where young people can build prosperous lives.
