Residents of Funsi North electoral in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region are voicing growing concerns over persistent water shortages that severely impact daily life. The community, which relies on a single borehole for its water needs, faces ongoing challenges to access sufficient water, especially for women who bear the primary responsibility of fetching water for households.
During a recent community engagement with Info Radio, Madam Aminatu Seidu described the situation as alarming. She explained that the scarcity of water often leads to disputes among women as they compete to gather enough for their families. This hardship complicates daily routines, making it difficult for mothers to provide for their children and prepare them for school in the mornings. Madam Seidu called on government authorities, development partners, and philanthropists to intervene and support efforts to establish a reliable and sustainable water supply for Funsi North.
The community’s plight was further highlighted by Hon. Mamud S. Yussif, the Assemblyman for Funsi North, who appeared on Info Radio’s News Current Affairs Program"Ti Zine Yiri Yela." He identified water scarcity as the most pressing challenge facing the electoral area. Hon. Yussif revealed that a borehole project, initiated in 2015 by former Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Henry Seidu Danaa, has remained incomplete for several years. To address this, the community established a levy of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis
( GH₵5,000) on residents and non-residents who cut down trees, with the funds intended to complete the borehole.
Hon. Yussif appealed to non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, and the government to support Funsi North in securing a sustainable water solution, emphasizing the urgent need for a reliable water supply to improve living conditions in the community.
