Farmers in the Gurungu Electoral Area of the Wa West District in the Upper West Region ofGhana are urgently calling on the government to expedite the distribution of promised fertilizer for this year’s farming season. With the rainy season underway, farmers warn that ongoing delays threaten to undermine crop production and jeopardize their livelihoods.

Speaking to Info Radio, local farmer Mr. Baawa Danaah expressed concern over the situation, noting that many farmers have yet to receive the fertilizer essential for planting. “The delay has created uncertainty among us. We don’t know when the fertilizer will arrive, and this could affect the success of this season’s crops,” he said.

Mr. Danaah also highlighted the mounting marketing challenges faced by farmers in the area. He explained that large quantities of food crops harvested last year remain unsold due to poor market conditions, further straining farmers’ finances. Many depend heavily on proceeds from previous harvests to finance the upcoming planting season, and the current market struggles are compounding their economic difficulties.

The issue of fertilizer delays was also raised by the Assembly Member for Gurungu, Hon. Maayane Zumaa. He revealed that he has received numerous inquiries from farmers but has no official information regarding the timing of fertilizer distribution. “This uncertainty is causing anxiety among farmers eager to begin planting,” Hon. Zumaa stated.

He appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, along with the Wa West District Assembly, to intervene promptly to ensure the fertilizer is released without further delay. “Any prolongation could severely impact food production in the district and deepen the economic hardships faced by our farmers,” he warned.
