The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wa West, Hon. Richard Wulo, has raised urgent concerns over the escalating prevalence of drug abuse within the district, highlighting it as a significant obstacle to sustainable development, especially among young people. Speaking during the Third Ordinary Meeting of the Wa West District Assembly, Hon. Wulo emphasized that addressing substance misuse is essential for meaningful progress in the district.

The DCE noted that the rising trend of drug abuse is gradually undermining the district’s human capital, which he described as its most valuable asset. He warned that this menace is fueling criminal activities, contributing to increased school dropouts, and exacerbating public health challenges in the area. Hon. Wulo reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to intensify collaborative efforts with relevant stakeholders to implement proactive interventions aimed at curbing the scourge.

The Member of parliament for the area, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu speaking on the issue disclosed that local authorities have introduced new bye-laws banning night-time jamming, popularly known as "record dance," as part of broader efforts to combat drug and substance abuse. He explained that such nighttime entertainment activities often attract young people, creating environments conducive to substance misuse.

Hon. Toobu called on Assembly Members and community leaders to support the enforcement of these bye-laws, emphasizing that doing so will foster peace, safety, and discipline within the district. He urged a collective community effort to safeguard the future of Wa West’s youth and ensure sustainable development.
