The Assembly for the Varempere Electoral Area in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region, Mr Nicholas Darmuo Gyirikar, has expressed concerns that most children of school going age in Varemperi do not attend school.
He attributed this partly to the lack of classroom blocks but also blamed the parents for not showing interest in sending their wards to school.
Mr Gyirikar disclosed this in an interview with Info Radio following complaints by residents of Varempere that the lack of classrooms discourages children from going to school.
According to him, parents at the community prefer sending their children to the farm to sending them to school with the reason that the school lacks instructional rooms.
He said parents hold the view that the lack of classrooms at the school discouraged the children from going to school.
He however urged parents and guardians to not let the dilapidated nature of the school discourage children form going to school.
The residents of the community had told Info Radio that the dilapidated nature of the school is discouraging children, especially girls from going to school.
They said the situation leads to teenage pregnancies among the girls and subsequent school dropout.
Meanwhile, cooks at the school added their voice, complaining that the school lacks a source of drinking water, affecting their activities as well as children’s learning.
Madam Asana, a cook at the school, indicated that the school children have to enter people’s houses or cross roads before they can get water to drink.
The residents appealed to the government through the Wa West District Assembly to provide a classroom block for the school to improve enrollment and academic achievements of children.
