The Upper West Regional Fulani Chief, Alhaji Seidu Bukari, has issued a stern warning to cattle owners and the general public regarding the increasing trend of engaging unknown individuals to herd livestock. The Chief emphasized that this practice poses significant security and economic threats to the community.

Speaking on behalf of the Upper West Regional Fulbe Chairman, Yaro Pulo, the Wa Fulbe Committee Chairman, highlighted that numerous cattle owners have suffered substantial losses after entrusting their animals to herdsmen whose identities and backgrounds were not properly verified. He noted that there have been multiple instances where herdsmen, often described as Fulani herdsmen, have absconded with cattle, leaving owners helpless and unable to recover their livestock.

To mitigate these risks, the Regional Fulani Chief has urged all cattle owners and prospective herders to conduct thorough background checks before engaging any herdsman. As a precautionary measure, cattle owners are advised to inform their local Fulani or community chiefs prior to employing herdsmen. Additionally, Mr. Pulo emphasized the importance of signing formal contracts with herdsmen to ensure accountability and commitment.

The warnings come amid growing concerns over livestock theft and insecurity in the region, underscoring the need for vigilance and proper vetting in cattle rearing practices.
