The Bishop of Damongo Diocese and Vice President of the Tamale Ecclesiastical Province Pastoral Conference (TEPPCON), Most Rev. Peter Yelezuome, has highlighted the significant role of the Catholic Church in advancing health and education in Northern Ghana. He emphasized that the Church has consistently prioritized human development across its activities, positioning itself as a trailblazer in the region.

Bishop Yelezuome pointed out that one of the Church’s notable contributions has been in women empowerment, facilitated through TEPPCON’s initiatives. He also noted that civil education efforts by the Church have encouraged many Christians—who previously hesitated—to assume leadership roles, particularly in politics and other sectors.

While acknowledging the Church’s impactful work, Most Rev. Yelezuome admitted that resource constraints remain a significant obstacle. He explained that difficulties in attracting qualified human resources to rural health facilities and schools hinder further progress. Additionally, he questioned why local district authorities often exclude the Church from educational and health committees, despite the fact that over 80% of such facilities in the area are owned and operated by the Church.

The remarks were made during an interview with Info Radio at the ongoing 21st Biennial Plenary Assembly of the Province Pastoral Conference held at St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary in Wa.

Prof. Dittor Saa, an expert on the Church’s educational interventions, lauded the Catholic Church for its non-discriminatory approach, noting that it provides quality education to both members and non-members alike.

As the Church continues its developmental efforts, leaders stress the need for increased collaboration and resource support to sustain and expand its impactful initiatives in Northern Ghana.
