Wa West NDC Celebrates Reduction in Multidimensional Poverty

The Wa West Constituency Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the significant reduction in multidimensional poverty in the district, describing it as a major achievement worthy of celebration.

Addressing a press conference following the release of the Ghana Statistical Service multidimensional poverty report, the Wa West NDC Constituency Chairman, Mathew Vaari, said the district has moved from being ranked among the poorest and most vulnerable districts in Ghana to a more improved status.

According to him, recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows that multidimensional poverty in Wa West reduced from 61.9 percent in 2021 to 24 percent in 2025, representing a 37.9 percentage point decline within four years.

He described the development as the largest improvement recorded nationally and said the achievement has changed the narrative about the district.

Mr. Vaari attributed the progress to the leadership of the Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Peter Lanchene Toobu, whom he said assumed office at a time when the district was battling high levels of poverty.

He noted that the MP’s vision of improving the lives of constituents through innovative interventions and stakeholder collaboration contributed significantly to the progress made in the district.

The NDC Chairman highlighted several initiatives undertaken by the Member of Parliament during his first term in office from 2021 to 2025. These, he said, included the payment of school fees for hundreds of students, financial support for women in business, and the implementation of the “Future Today” youth empowerment programme.

He further mentioned the “Water is Wealth” initiative, which promotes dry season farming through the distribution of pumping machines to young farmers, as well as the expansion of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to benefit vulnerable persons in the constituency.

Other interventions cited included the drilling of boreholes to improve access to potable water, support for farmers, communal labour projects, the donation of motorbikes to the police to improve security patrols, and the provision of waterproof life jackets to facilitate business activities across the Black Volta.

Mr. Vaari also acknowledged the contributions of faith-based organisations, traditional authorities, women groups, youth associations, and non-governmental organisations towards the district’s development.

He called on residents of Wa West to remain united and continue supporting efforts aimed at reducing poverty, deprivation, and underdevelopment in the district.
