Tension Runs High in The Upper West Region as Insecurity Incidents Rise


The Upper West Region has been thrown into a state of heightened anxiety following a series of violent incidents in the past week, which have resulted in the loss of seven lives.

On Monday night, two night security guards were brutally murdered in Wa, the regional capital, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the Wa community. The motive behind the killings is yet to be determined.

Just days later, on June 15, a land dispute between the people of Kendeu and Lassia Tuolu in the Wa West District escalated into a deadly confrontation, resulting in three fatalities.

In another incident on June 17, two individuals lost their lives at Yanyuoyire, a community in the Wa East District due to a chieftaincy dispute. The victims were reportedly caught in the crossfire between rival factions vying for control.

The three incidents have heightened tension in affected communities, with residents calling on regional leadership and security agencies to take immediate action to reduce the anxiety and find solutions to the ongoing chieftaincy and land disputes.

In an interview with Info Radio, several residents expressed concern about the escalating violence and insecurity in the region. "We are living in fear, we don't know what's happening next. We want the authorities to do something to bring peace to our communities," said Mr. Rashid Seidu,a resident .

Another resident lamented, "These incidents are not just mere coincidences, there's something more to it. We need our leaders to sit down and find solutions to these disputes before things get out of hand."

Regional authorities have yet to issue am official statement on the incidents, but Info Radio sources close to the matter indicates that the Upper West regional security council headed by the Upper West Regional minister met on Tuesday 18th June,2024 to investigate the killings and bring perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, residents are calling for calm and restraint, urging community leaders to engage in dialogue to resolve the disputes peacefully. The people of Upper West Region are anxiously awaiting concrete measures from regional leadership and security agencies to address the growing insecurity and restore peace to their communities.
