A stream linking Deriyiri in the Manwe Electoral Area and Kpaglahi in the Kpaglahi Electoral Area in the Wa East Dsitricts of the Upper West Region continues to pose significant challenges for local commuters, particularly during the rainy season. The dangerous waterway has become a major obstacle, severely limiting access to essential economic and social services for communities on both sides.

Residents and local leaders speaking to Info Radio have expressed growing concern over the persistent danger the stream presents. During heavy rains, the water level rises sharply, turning the crossing into a hazardous barrier that isolates communities and hampers daily activities. Many residents find themselves stranded, unable to reach markets, schools, healthcare facilities, and other vital services.

Speaking exclusively to Info News, the Chief of Deriyiri, Naa Iddrisu Mumuni, highlighted the community’s plight, noting that the current situation has left many residents in distress. “Our people are often stranded during the rainy season. It severely affects their livelihoods and access to basic needs,” he said.

In light of these ongoing difficulties, Kaara Gana, a local community advocate, called on government authorities to prioritize infrastructure development in the area. Gana appealed for the construction of a simple, passable bridge over the stream to ensure year-round connectivity and safety for residents. “We need a durable solution that allows our people to stay connected to their neighbors and access services without risking their lives,” Gana emphasized.
