Residents of Kolkpong, a predominantly farming community in the Wa East District have voiced deep concern over the escalating prevalence of drug abuse among the community’s youth, warning of the potentially devastating impact on the future of their young population. The widespread involvement of young people in drug use has ignited fears that many may become burdens on their families and society at large.
During an interview with Info Radio, Mr. Salifu Hamidu, a local resident, described the situation as a “canker” threatening the community’s youth. He emphasized that many young individuals engaged in drug abuse are increasingly unable to participate in productive employment or contribute meaningfully to society. Mr. Hamidu called on relevant authorities, including security agencies and social welfare organizations, to take immediate action to curb the menace and restore discipline among the youth.
In addition to concerns over drug abuse, community members also highlighted infrastructural challenges. Saaka Yaw, another resident, pointed out the deplorable condition of Kolkpong road, which has become a significant obstacle to economic development. He explained that the poor state of the road hampers transportation of goods and daily activities, further affecting the community’s livelihood.
Mr. Yaw urged the government to prioritize the rehabilitation of Kolkpong road to improve accessibility and stimulate economic growth in the area. The residents’ appeals underscore the urgent need for comprehensive intervention to address both social and infrastructural issues facing Kolkpong.
