The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Upper West Region has voiced serious concerns over the deteriorating state of major roads, warning that the worsening conditions are severely disrupting transport operations and endangering livelihoods.

During an interview on Info Radio Weekend Watch on Saturday , Alhaji Nuhu Mahama, Senior Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU in the region, highlighted the alarming decline of key routes, particularly the Wa–Techiman–Kumasi corridor. He explained that the poor state of these roads has made travel increasingly arduous, costly, and perilous for both drivers and passengers.

“Our roads are in a deplorable state. The frequent potholes, erosion, and uneven surfaces force drivers to spend more on vehicle maintenance and repairs,” Alhaji Mahama lamented. “What used to be a relatively smooth journey now takes nearly twice as long, with many vehicles breaking down regularly, impacting both safety and efficiency.”

The impact of the poor road conditions extends beyond individual drivers. Farmers and traders have reported significant post-harvest losses, as vehicles struggle to reach markets promptly. Key routes such as Wa–Tumu, Wa–Wechiau, and Wa–Lawra–Hamile have been identified as being in particularly bad shape, further complicating transportation and economic activities in the region.

The situation has garnered attention amid recent government efforts to improve infrastructure. President John Dramani Mahama recently cut sod for major road development projects under the "Big Push" initiative. In response, Alhaji Mahama called on the President to prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of roads in the Upper West, especially the Wa–Techiman–Kumasi highway, to alleviate the hardships faced by residents and transport operators.

The Union’s plea emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive road infrastructure investment to restore safe, reliable, and efficient transportation in the region, crucial for economic development and community well-being.
