The long-awaited reconstruction of the Sunyani-Techiman-Wenchi-Wa-Hamile road corridor is set to commence in the third quarter of this year under the government’s ambitious “Big Push” initiative.
This was announced by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, as he embarked on a three-day inspection tour of major road projects across the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Western Regions.
To ensure a smooth execution of the project, the Minister has instructed the Ghana Highways Authority to expedite engineering studies and designs for the sections of the corridor not currently under construction.
“This entire corridor, all the way to Hamile, is part of the ‘Big Push’ initiative. It is one of the projects we aim to award in June this year. Therefore, those involved in the studies and designs need to expedite their work. We don’t have enough time,” Mr Agbodza emphasized.
Highlighting the critical role of road infrastructure in national development, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the country’s road network despite financial constraints.
“No matter what we want to achieve—whether in farming, education, or healthcare—roads are critical. Our economic development cannot take shape if we do not address the challenges in the road sector,” he stressed.
The “Big Push” initiative forms part of the government’s strategic plan to accelerate infrastructure development across the country, particularly in critical areas that drive economic growth and connectivity.
As part of his tour, Mr Agbodza inspected the 10.20km Terchire bypass, located off the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway and constructed by Newmont Ghana. The bypass serves as an alternative route for travellers along the busy corridor.
The Minister is also expected to visit several other key road projects, including:
The reconstruction of the Jinijini-Sampa Road
The Tepa-Goaso Road
The Sefwi Wiawso town roads
The reconstruction of the Tarkwa-Agona Nkwanta Road
The PTC Interchange project
The dualization of the Takoradi-Agona Junction Road
According to the minister, these projects are part of a broader effort to enhance road infrastructure, ease transportation challenges, and boost economic activities across the country.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Daffiame-Bussie-Issa, Dr Sebastian N. Sandaare, has appealed to President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, cause the immediate rehabilitation or reconstruction of the Wa-Bole-Techiman road to curb accidents, robbery and deaths along the stretch daily.
In a statement he read on the floor of Parliament to draw the House’s attention to the deplorable nature of the Wa-Bole-Techiman road, Dr Sandaare was optimistic that enhancing the state of the road would also help to create jobs in those regions for the unemployed youth.
Passengers traveling along the Wa-Bole-Techiman road have expressed deep frustration over the deplorable condition of the highway. For several years, commuters have endured the challenges posed by the poor state of the road, which has made journeys arduous and unpredictable.
The road's deteriorated condition is not only causing inconvenience but also posing significant safety risks. Potholes, deep cracks, and uneven surfaces are common features along the route, making it difficult for drivers to navigate, especially during the rainy season.
With the “Big Push” initiative gaining momentum, residents and road users along the Sunyani-Techiman-Wenchi-Wa-Hamile corridor can look forward to smoother and safer travel experiences in the near future.
