Farmers have been advised to resort to organic fertilizers to reduce their cost of production while improving their crop yield and soil structure.
Mr. Emmanuel Sasu Yeboah, the Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture, who gave the advice in an interview with Info Radio in Wa, noted that manure from livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, and fowl are good sources of manure for the crop.
He explained that the inorganic fertilizer can then be used for top dressing and the farmer would still achieve the same yield as using only the inorganic fertilizer which is expensive and also destroys the soil structure.
He explained that using organic fertilizer should be the order of the day and added that the government has included the organic fertilizer in the Planting for Food and Jobs programme because it is good for the farmers.
Mr. Yeboah explained that organic fertilizers are less expensive compared to inorganic fertilizers and explained the cost-benefit of organic fertilizers.
