Residents of Babile in the Lawra Municipality are calling for the immediate activation of the community’s long-standing fire station, which has remained unused for over five years despite multiple fire outbreaks and urgent safety concerns. The fire post, completed in 2020, has yet to be put into operation, much to the dismay of local residents who have repeatedly appealed for its activation.

During a recent community clean-up exercise, the Regent of Babile, Vitus Kadoe Dapilah, voiced his frustrations over the continued neglect of the facility. He emphasized that several appeals to the Lawra Municipal Assembly and the Member of Parliament have so far yielded no tangible response. “Babile is a fire-prone area, and we have experienced several devastating market fires, including one that completely destroyed our marketplace. We need this fire post operationalized to safeguard our community,” he stated.

In response to these concerns, Lawra’s Member of Parliament, Bede Ziedeng, acknowledged that the fire station remains an uncompleted project. He assured residents that efforts would be made to make the facility functional, emphasizing its importance for community safety. “The fire post is a critical infrastructure, and we will ensure it is not left to waste,” MP Ziedeng assured.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Lawra, Soyella Cecilia Nuratu, also confirmed that the local assembly is exploring ways to complete the project under the government’s legacy projects framework. She highlighted that key requirements such as electricity supply, water connection, and minor renovations are necessary before the fire post can be operationalized.
