The people of Ase, a farming community in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region have kicked off an exciting football tournament involving sixteen local communities, marking a significant expansion from last year's event, which featured only eight. The tournament, which commenced on December 27, 2025, ran until January 3, 2026, and aimed to promote social cohesion, enhance local unity, and stimulate economic activity within the region.
In an interview with Info Radio, Mr. Vincent Sandaa Yelibo-Mwini highlighted the importance of the event, noting that it serves as a platform for fostering community spirit and supporting local businesses during the festive season. “This year's football gala has doubled in size, reflecting the growing enthusiasm and unity among the communities,” he said. “Participants and supporters alike benefit from increased social interaction, and local vendors see a boost in sales during this period.”
The tournament promises attractive prizes for the winning teams, including jerseys, footballs, a yet-to-be-disclosed cash reward, and other gifts. Mr. Yelibo-Mwini emphasized that the event not only offers entertainment but also elevates the profile of Ase within the Upper West Region.
However, the organizer, Mr. Saaka Azaya, acknowledged that the tournament has faced some challenges, such as concerns over fairness, disagreements among community members, and interference by coaches. He urged players and supporters to exercise patience, maintain peace, and demonstrate sportsmanship throughout the competition to ensure its success.
As the event progresses, the communities of Ase continue to rally behind their teams, demonstrating a shared commitment to unity and regional development through the love of football. The Ase football gala is poised to be a memorable celebration of community spirit and regional pride.
