The recurrent flooding in the Wa Municipality has been attributed to inadequate drainage infrastructure and damaging human activities, according to Osman Abdul Latif Sinsew, the Upper West Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

During an interview on Info Radio, Mr. Sinsew highlighted that despite the municipality's significant expansion over recent years, the existing drainage systems have not been upgraded accordingly. He explained that the smaller drainage channels are ill-equipped to handle the large volumes of water generated during heavy rains, resulting in frequent flooding in several parts of the municipality.

Mr. Sinsew also pointed to indiscriminate waste disposal as a major exacerbating factor. "Some residents dump refuse into drains, blocking the free flow of water and worsening flooding incidents," he noted. He emphasized that many of the floods are predominantly caused by human actions that could be mitigated through better waste management practices.

The NADMO official urged prospective developers to seek proper approval from the municipal assembly before constructing new buildings or structures. He warned that unauthorized construction on waterways and wetlands is a key contributor to the flooding problem, as it obstructs natural drainage pathways and heightens flood risks during the rainy season.

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Sinsew called on residents to support efforts to reduce flooding by adhering to planning regulations and practicing responsible waste disposal. He emphasized that collective action is essential to safeguarding the community from the devastating impacts of recurrent floods.
