Former Member of Parliament for Lawra Constituency and ex-Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, has reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to retaining Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. His comments come amid speculation following the party’s defeat in the 2024 polls.
Speaking to Info Radio during the second day of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Mr. Karbo emphasized that the party has no plans to replace the former Vice President as its standard-bearer. He highlighted that Bawumia remains the most viable candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028, citing the party’s historical pattern of presidential hopefuls not winning on their first attempt. “This should not be seen as a disqualification, but rather as part of the usual progression,” Mr. Karbo stated.
He also commended NPP supporters in the Upper West Region for their warm reception of Dr. Bawumia, noting that the enthusiasm reflected the party’s unity and readiness ahead of the upcoming internal primaries. “The support we are seeing here is a testament to the strength of our party and the confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership,” he said.
Furthermore, Mr. Karbo reassured that the NPP is actively working to foster internal cohesion and build a formidable campaign front. He expressed optimism that party delegates across the country are responding positively to Dr. Bawumia’s message as he continues grassroots engagements in preparation for the 2028 elections.
As the NPP gears up for its internal primaries scheduled for January2026, the party appears firmly united behind Bawumia, signaling a strategic focus on consolidating support for the presidential race two years ahead.
