ActionAid Ghana, in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has officially handed over one solar powered mechanized borehole and five hand-pumped boreholes to several communities within the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region. The beneficiary communities include Navilli, Yizieri, and Kpaala, among others.
The initiative is part of the Community Action Plan Project (CAPS), which is co-funded by GIZ and implemented by ActionAid Ghana. The broader project also encompasses the construction of irrigation facilities aimed at bolstering agricultural productivity and economic resilience in the region.
Addressing attendees at the handover ceremony, ActionAid Ghana’s Country Director, Mr. John Nkaw, emphasized the project's alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5, 6, and 13, which focus on gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and climate action, respectively. He highlighted that over 161 boreholes have been installed across the Upper West Region to date, significantly improving water access for rural communities.
Mr. Nkaw noted, “This initiative reflects our commitment, alongside our partners—EU, BMZ, and GIZ—to eradicate poverty and ensure sustainable access to clean water, which is vital for health, education, and economic development.”
Representing the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Mr. Baphongyang B. Cletus expressed optimism that the new water facilities would alleviate the difficulties communities face in accessing safe water, thereby fostering improved livelihoods and community growth.
The District Chief Executive for Nadowli-Kaleo, Hon. Mary Haruna, also underscored the importance of the boreholes. She stated that the new facilities would help reduce waterborne diseases and enable children to spend more time in school rather than searching for water, thus promoting better health and educational outcomes.
Community members from Navilli shared their experiences, recounting the hardships endured before the intervention—long walks and strenuous efforts to find potable water. Their testimonies underscore the transformative impact of the project.
This collaborative effort marks a crucial step toward sustainable development and improved quality of life for communities in the Nadowli-Kaleo District.
