Women of Gmaakpee Raise Alarm over Water Crisis amid Unkept Promises

ree

In the Kancheng Electoral Area, women of Gmaakpee assembled to urgently demand access to clean water.

Madam Nooyi Bierigbee spoke passionately on behalf of her community, shedding light on a crisis that has long been ignored—a severe lack of access to clean, portable drinking water.

Despite the unwavering support of women in each election cycle, their basic need for safe drinking water remains unmet. Residents of Gmaakpee rely on streams and rivers, often contaminated and shared with animals, exposing them to grave health risks.

“We continue to drink from unsafe sources because there is no alternative,” Madam Nooyi revealed, her voice thick with frustration and hope.

Compounding the community’s frustration is the ongoing cycle of complaints to local authorities—the Member of Parliament, District Chief Executive, and Assemblyman—that have led to no tangible action.

“All our leaders are aware of our plight,” she asserted, “yet our repeated reminders are met with empty promises that remain unredeemed.”

Despite deep disappointment, the women of Gmaakpee remain steadfast. Their plea now extends beyond elected officials to humanitarian organizations and NGOs, appealing for urgent intervention to provide what should be a fundamental right—access to clean water.

Echoing the women’s sentiments, Hon Ebenezer Biile Sounso, the Assemblyman for the Electoral Area, painted a stark picture of the community’s plight: “Gmaakpee is a place where humans literally share drinking water with animals. The women, in their search for potable water, often face fights at crowded sources or endure grueling journeys that last up to seven hours. This is not just a water crisis; it is a humanitarian crisis.”
