Residents of Deriyiri, a farming community in the Manwe Electoral Area are facing an acute water crisis, forcing them to share their only water source with animals and risking their health. The community’s sole borehole frequently malfunctions due to pressure issues, leaving residents with limited options, primarily the nearby river, which is also a drinking spot for wildlife.

Speaking exclusively to Info News, Mr. Kaara Gana a resident, highlighted the dire situation, noting that access to clean, potable water remains a persistent challenge. "Our community struggles daily to get water; the borehole often breaks down, and the river is our only alternative, which is unsafe," he said.

The crisis has broader social implications, with residents expressing concerns about its impact on community life. Mr. Nuansa Doglitaa lamented that the water scarcity has discouraged families from procreating, citing the harsh conditions as a deterrent to settling down and raising children.

Women in Deriyiri are also bearing the brunt of the crisis. Madam Ooh Kpari described the water as unsafe for consumption, yet residents have no choice but to use it. She further explained that the situation has adversely affected social cohesion, with some women now hesitant to marry into the community due to the ongoing water issues.

The community’s struggles extend to their daily routines and safety. Madam Ataa Gyienkaara recounted frequent fights at the borehole as residents jostle for access, a situation she believes is adversely affecting school enrollment. In a troubling incident, Madam Kosie Gyirah revealed her daughter sustained injuries during a scuffle at the borehole and has yet to recover.

Adding to the community’s woes, Madam Bariyiri Dama described the water as heavily polluted, noting that even their food, such as soup, tastes unpleasant due to the contaminated water.

The residents of Deriyiri are calling on authorities to address the water shortage urgently, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to ensure safe, reliable access to clean water and improve living conditions in the community.
