Demolition of Tendamba Primary School in Wa Sparks PTA/SMC Resignations and Pupils’ Dropout

The Wa Municipal Assembly on the midnight of Saturday 13.6.2026 demolished the historic Tendamba Primary School, prompting widespread discontent among community members, school management, and parents. The demolition, carried out in the dead of night on Saturday, June 13, 2026, has led to the resignation of key stakeholders and a sharp decline in student enrollment.
The school, which has served the Tendamba and Wa community for over 70 years, was razed to make way for the construction of a new "24 Hour Economy Market." Despite vehement opposition from the School Management Committee, the Parent-Teacher Association, some landlords, school alumni, the Assembly proceeded with the demolition, citing the location been a strategic location for a market , instead of a school.
According to sources within the school, numerous parents have withdrawn their children, citing safety concerns and dissatisfaction with the forced relocation. As a result, the student population has decreased from 270 to approximately 222 pupils. Many students are believed to have dropped out permanently following the upheaval.

The displaced students are now attending classes in renovated classrooms on the campus of Tendamba Junior High School. However, the new arrangements are far from ideal. Investigations by Info Radio reveal that the relocated school lacks basic facilities, including functioning toilets, proper sanitation, electricity, and designated playgrounds for sporting activities. These deficiencies are hampering the quality of teaching and learning, raising concerns among educators and parents alike.
A cross section of community leaders are calling on the Wa Municipal Assembly to implement measures that will ensure a smooth transition for the pupils and provide a conducive environment for education. They emphasize the importance of addressing infrastructural shortcomings to prevent further decline in educational standards and community trust.
As tensions rise, the community awaits a responsive and inclusive approach from local authorities to restore stability and foster a supportive learning environment for the children of Tendamba.
