The Chief of Wasai, Kuoro Alhaji Abu Kuntulo Dinbon II, has called on government, non-governmental organizations, and development partners to prioritize urgent infrastructural needs in the Wasai community in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region.

The appeal was made during a media engagement held at Besinmie, Wasai on May 18, 2025 under the theme: “Advocating, Engaging, and Lobbying for Improved Infrastructural Developments.” The event marked a significant milestone, being the first of its kind organized in the community by the chief since his enskinment in December 2024.

During the conference, the Chief highlighted seven major development concerns affecting the Wasai community:

1. Incomplete School Infrastructure

The community is currently constructing a two-unit Kindergarten classroom block through voluntary efforts. However, four more classrooms are urgently needed to support Primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) pupils.

“We are calling on government and benevolent stakeholders to help us complete the remaining classrooms to enhance teaching and learning,” he said.

2. ICT Lab Equipment

The chief appealed for the replacement of faulty computers and the provision of tablets and other digital learning tools to improve the school's ICT capacity.

3. Poor Road Network

Deplorable roads, including the Wasai-Oulokung-Oulo, Wasai-Du, and Wasai-Papreme roads, were cited as major barriers to socio-economic development. The Chief specifically urged the Department of Feeder Roads to fix the collapsed culvert at the Oulo-Wasai junction and open access routes between communities.

4. Request for a Community Dam

A dam project, the Chief said, would enhance irrigation, agriculture, and job creation, particularly for the youth.

5. Sanitation Challenges

To address open defecation, the Chief appealed for a bio-gas toilet facility, commonly known as the Samasama model, to serve both male and female residents.

6. Need for a Community Centre

The community is seeking support to construct a multi-purpose meeting centre, proposed to be named the Wasai Community Centre. The facility would include a satellite television system for youth engagement through football and entertainment.

7. Environmental Protection

The Chief urged the community to protect essential tree species such as shea trees, warning against indiscriminate cutting and advocating for reforestation efforts.

A Broader Appeal

In closing, Kuoro Kuntulo called on the District Chief Executive (DCE), Member of Parliament (MP), government agencies, NGOs, and private individuals to rally behind the Wasai development agenda.

He also requested that local artisans and volunteers be included in government entrepreneurship programs, particularly those that support ongoing community development projects.

Our people are ready to work and support development. What we need now is recognition and strategic support from our leaders,” the Chief emphasized.
