The Wa West Member of Parliament Peter Lanchene Toobu has publicly expressed his support for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill.
In an interview with Info Radio, Mr. Toobu emphasized that, despite concerns raised by the minority members in parliament, President John Mahama and the Speaker of Parliament regarding the bill’s procedural handling, a significant segment of the Ghanaian populace remains in favor of the legislation.
The legislator disclosed that Parliament is expected to revisit the bill, following a directive from the Speaker for its reconsideration. He reiterated that Parliament has a duty to uphold Ghanaian cultural values by preventing the promotion of same-sex marriage, which he described as incompatible with national norms.
Mr. Toobu also alleged that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) intends to leverage the bill as a campaign issue in the lead-up to the 2028 general elections. Nonetheless, he affirmed that both the President and Parliament’s leadership remain committed to ensuring the bill is thoroughly considered and progresses through the legislative process.
As Ghana continues to navigate this contentious issue, the debate underscores the deep cultural and political divisions surrounding LGBTQ rights and national values.
