The Wa West District Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has announced the formation of Disaster Volunteer Groups (DVGs) in collaboration with local Assembly Members to effectively manage and control bushfires across the district. This strategic initiative aims to protect farmlands, properties, and the environment during the dry season, especially as some farmers are still harvesting their crops.
In an interview with Info Radio, NADMO District Director Mr. Gyirikar Nicholas Damuo highlighted the urgency of the program, emphasizing that bushfires pose a significant threat to the district’s agricultural activities and community assets. “The formation of these volunteer groups is crucial in our efforts to prevent the devastating effects of bushfires, which could destroy valuable farmlands and properties if not managed properly,” he stated.
Mr. Damuo also issued a stern warning to hunters operating within the district, cautioning against practices that contribute to the outbreak of fires. He noted that some hunting methods have inadvertently led to the destruction of farmlands and expressed concern over reports of domestic animals being killed as a result of reckless hunting activities.
Furthermore, the NADMO official urged residents to exercise caution in the use of natural resources, particularly advising against the indiscriminate cutting of economically important trees such as shea and dawada. He stressed that sustainable management of these resources is essential for environmental preservation and community livelihood.
The initiative by NADMO and local authorities underscores the district’s commitment to proactive disaster management and community involvement in safeguarding their environment and livelihoods during the dry season.
