The Wa West District Assembly has announced the successful disbursement of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash grants to over 3,600 beneficiaries across the district. District Chief Executive Richard Wulo disclosed this achievement during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Wa West District Assembly.
According to Mr. Wulo, a total of 3,621 residents have received their LEAP payments, marking a significant step in the district’s efforts to alleviate poverty and support vulnerable populations. He also confirmed the completion of the LEAP Re-Assessment exercise within the district, which paves the way for the subsequent phase of support distribution.
However, while progress is evident in the LEAP program, concerns persist over delays in the release of funds from the Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) Common Fund. Mr. Benard Timbouri, an ambulatory wheelchair user and volunteer teacher at Younuuri D/A Basic School in the Jagluu Electoral Area, has called on district authorities to intervene in the protracted release of his long-overdue PWD cash grant.
Speaking to Info Radio from his community, Mr. Timbouri revealed that he has not received his allocation since 2017, despite the policy that beneficiaries should receive support three times annually. He expressed frustration over the lack of response to his appeals over the years, which has left him without critical financial assistance intended to support his livelihood.
The district administration has acknowledged the concerns and emphasized its commitment to resolving the delays, vowing to work with relevant agencies to ensure timely disbursement of funds to all eligible beneficiaries.
