Residents of Kantu, a farming community in the Wa West District are appealing to government authorities for urgent intervention to address critical infrastructure deficiencies that are severely impacting their daily lives. The community, which has been without access to potable water for over two years, is now relying on a river approximately 20 kilometers away, raising concerns about health and sanitation.
Yirinebe Tabere, a resident, explained that broken boreholes have left residents dependent on unsafe water sources. "Our community has been without clean water for over two years. We now fetch water from a river far from here, which is affecting the health of both adults and children," he lamented.
In addition to water challenges, community members highlighted the poor state of the local road network. Tuobare Sobelle, another resident, noted that a previously initiated road project by the district assembly has stalled, making transportation difficult—particularly during emergencies. He emphasized that the bad roads hinder farmers from transporting their produce to markets, thereby affecting their livelihoods.
The chief of Kantu, Naa Donlere Pie-Oro Kantu, expressed grave concern over the lack of basic services in the community. Despite participating in national elections, residents remain without access to essential facilities such as water, roads, and healthcare. He called on government and stakeholders to prioritize development initiatives in the area and urged the district assembly to engage more regularly with residents to plan and implement impactful projects.
