Wa West DCE Urges Chiefs and Landlords to Support Fight Against Illegal Mining Along Black Volta

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wa West, Mr. Wulo Richard, has issued a strong call to action to traditional leaders and landlords in the district to play an active role in protecting the Black Volta River from the destructive effects of illegal mining.

Speaking at a community sensitization program organized by the Ghana Boundary Commission at Chiatanga in the Sigri Electoral Area, Mr. Wulo stressed the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the Black Volta, which he described as a vital natural asset with both ecological and cultural significance.

Under the theme “Building Resilient Communities Through Responsible Local and Collaborative Boundary Management,” the event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of boundary preservation and sustainable resource management among communities in the area.

Mr. Wulo highlighted the Black Volta’s importance not only as a water source but also as a potential tourist attraction that could bring economic benefits to the district. He emphasized that while other parts of the country long for such a resource, Wa West is privileged to have it and must do everything possible to protect it for the benefit of future generations.

"The Black Volta is not just a river—it is a living entity with spiritual and cultural relevance to our communities. It must be preserved, not exploited," Mr. Wulo said.

He further warned of the devastating impacts of illegal mining on human health, water quality, and agriculture. He appealed to traditional authorities and residents to unite against such activities, which threaten the sustainability and sanctity of the river.

The DCE's remarks come amid growing concerns over illegal mining operations along the Black Volta, which have been linked to environmental degradation and water pollution in the region.

Mr. Wulo’s call is expected to galvanize community leaders and stakeholders to strengthen local efforts aimed at curbing illegal mining and promoting responsible stewardship of the area’s natural resources.
