Upper West GNAT Calls for Urgent Reassessment Of WASSCE Pass Rates in Key Subjects

The Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Alhaji Mujeeb Suleman, has voiced serious concerns over the declining performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with particular focus on English Language and Mathematics.

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the pass rates for these critical subjects have seen a troubling decline. In English Language, only 62.40 percent of candidates achieved grades from A1 to C6, while Mathematics recorded a similar performance with 60.75 percent attaining comparable grades.

A four-year trend analysis by WAEC reveals a consistent downward trajectory in English Language results, dropping from a high of 73.11 percent in 2023 to 69.52 percent in 2024, 69.00 percent in 2025, and further plummeting to 62.40 percent in 2026.

Speaking exclusively to Info Radio, Mr. Suleman expressed disappointment with these results, emphasizing that GNAT is not proud of the declining performance. He highlighted that the trend reflects systemic issues that cannot solely be attributed to teachers. Instead, he called for a collective effort among students, educators, and policymakers to critically evaluate the current approaches and implement sustainable solutions to reverse the negative trend.
