The Upper West Regional Office of the Center for National Culture has issued a formal directive to all event organizers within the region, urging them to notify and engage their respective district offices prior to hosting events related to customs and traditions. This initiative aims to ensure proper oversight and accurate representation of local cultural practices.
In an interview with Info Radio, the Regional Public Relations Officer for the Upper West Center for National Culture, Mr. Songsore Mulumba, emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s and the region’s indigenous cultures. He stated that the center is legally mandated to protect and promote the authentic heritage of the various tribes in the region. The directive aims to prevent the misinterpretation or distortion of cultural expressions during public events.
Mr. Mulumba also expressed concern over the rapid erosion of traditional values among the region’s tribes. He noted with regret that customary practices such as traditional dirges accompanied by xylophones are increasingly being replaced by contemporary music at funeral ceremonies. He called on traditional authorities to play an active role in preserving and revitalizing their cultural heritage for future generations.
The Center for National Culture’s initiative underscores the region’s commitment to maintaining its rich cultural diversity amidst changing social dynamics.
