Local Government Expert, Mr Freeman Kanton has mentioned that Unit Committee members are very important under the local government structure.
According to him, Unit Committee members have more responsibility under the current local government structure.
Mr Kanton speaking to Info Radio noted that Unit Committee members are supposed to monitor development in their communities. He explained that they are the first point of call in the communities.
“Unit Committee members are very important. Their responsibilities are many under the structure of the assembly. Unit Committee members are supposed to monitor development in their communities and so they are community specific,” he said.
He noted that they are supposed to report and account to the community on the progress of developmental projects in the community.
He also stated that Area Councils are entitled to 40 per cent of all revenues they mobilized for the District Assembly.
“The assembly is supposed to give each area council an amount of money depending on the revenue they raised.”
The money allocated to the Unit committee members should be used for the development of the area council.
