Seontaa Boor revives Daga-Wiile traditions for future generations

Martin Kyasuo Sunti

The Planning Committee Chairman of the Daga-Wiile Seontaa Boor, Mr Mathias Gangana, says he is proud that the implementation of the Daga-Wiile Seontaa Boor has revived some cultural practices of the Daga-Wiile that were fast dying.

The Chairman stated that cultural practices like the Boor dance, storytelling, and playing xylophone were some of the practices that were fast dying but now gradually changing positively.

According to him, the Seontaa Boor has come to stay and would be used to promote the positive cultural practices of the Daga-Wiile people and beyond its catchment area.

The celebration was on the theme Our Heritage, “Our Pride: Celebrating the Rich Culture of the Daga-Wiile. The festival was marked by a vibrant celebration of heritage and community aspirations.

Speaking during the Seontaa Boor celebration at Vieri on January 6, 2025, Mr Gangana said that because of the Seontaa Boor annual celebration, different people can identify the Daga-Wiile and their culture.

“The Seontaa Boor celebration has provided us with numerous benefits. Many cultural practices that were fading away have been revitalized. Children who were previously unfamiliar with the 'Boor dance' now understand what it is, along with several other traditions that were at risk of being lost. People can now easily identify the Daga-Wiile and our cultural heritage,” he stated.

He however decried the low participation of the Dag-Wiile people in the Seontaa Boor activities.

"It is disappointing that not many people are showing interest in the festival celebration. We had hoped to see more young people participating this year. Although there are several funerals happening around the same time, we still expected a larger turnout."

Mr Ben Sadik Baba, speaking on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Wa West constituency, Sup (Rtd) Peter Lanchene Toobu, urged the youth of Daga-Wiile not to let the culture fade.
