Sanitation challenges in the Wa Municipality have been partly attributed to inadequate settlement planning and the attitudes of community members towards environmental cleanliness. Former Municipal Environmental Director, Mr. Francis Yeliyen, highlighted that poorly designed layouts significantly contribute to sanitation issues across many neighborhoods.
Speaking on Info Radio, Mr. Yeliyen explained that the absence of effective drainage systems hampers water flow, leading to stagnant pools that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing pests. He emphasized that such conditions heighten the risk of health outbreaks within affected communities.
Mr. Yeliyen also stressed the importance of accessible waste disposal facilities. He called for the strategic placement of trash bins to facilitate easy collection by waste management trucks, thereby reducing litter and environmental hazards. Additionally, he urged private business owners to actively participate in sanitation initiatives to bolster efforts aimed at improving environmental health in the municipality.
Meanwhile, Municipal Environmental Director, Mr. Razak Kanyiti, underscored that maintaining proper sanitation is vital for enhancing residents' quality of life. According to him, a clean environment not only promotes good health but also helps prevent pollution and curb the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. Mr. Kanyiti appealed to residents to take personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to adopt sustainable sanitation practices.
