Residents of Vieri in the Wa West District, are calling on government to complete an abandoned polyclinic project that began in 2012, citing increasing pressure on limited healthcare services.
The concerns were raised during the community’s 2026 Easter Picnic celebration, where residents told Info Radio that rapid population growth has overstretched the only existing health facility.
According to them, the current polyclinic is inadequate to serve both Vieri and nearby communities.
The residents explained that through local efforts, the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound was upgraded into a health centre and later into a sub-district facility.
However, infrastructure has not kept pace with demand, with nurses attending to more than 50 patients daily under congested conditions.
Some of the residents noted that the situation has forced the community to convert a children’s nutrition centre into a temporary clinic. Using locally mobilized resources, including plywood, residents and health officials have partitioned the space to create a dispensary and pharmacy to support basic healthcare delivery.

Residents believe completing the abandoned facility would significantly improve access to quality healthcare and ease pressure on existing services.
Former Assemblyman for Vieri, Joseph Dare Yaweh, said the project started in 2012 as part of a legacy programme and was intended to serve as a polyclinic with the potential to be upgraded into a hospital. He indicated that the project was near completion before it was halted.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has assured residents that steps are being taken to complete some legacy projects including the abandoned Vieri health facility project. He said the Ministry of Finance has directed District and Municipal Assemblies to allocate funds for their completion.
According to him, the Vieri facility, along with similar projects in Eggu and Gurungu, will be prioritized under the initiative, alongside other ongoing developments in the district.
