Presiding Member Urges Assembly to Confirm Re-Nominated DCE for Wa East District

The Presiding Member of the Wa East District Assembly, Mr. Timothy N. Naaba, is urging Assembly Members to confirm the President’s re-nominated candidate, Adamu Sayibu, as District Chief Executive (DCE), amid growing political tension and concerns over-representation.

Mr Sayibu, who previously failed to secure the required number of votes, was rejected by Assembly Members after receiving only 13 out of 36 votes — far below the two-thirds threshold needed for confirmation. His re-nomination has sparked renewed debate within the district, with some community members expressing dissatisfaction over the balance of political appointments and representation.

Speaking in an interview with Info Radio, Mr Timothy emphasized the negative impact of the DCE vacancy on the district’s governance. He noted that the absence of a confirmed DCE is stalling key administrative functions and delaying critical development projects, ultimately affecting service delivery across the Wa East District.

In response to swirling allegations of vote-buying, Mr Timothy has firmly denied reports that some Assembly Members received money ahead of the previous confirmation vote.

Meanwhile, Mr Stephen Katuole, the Dean of Assembly Members in the Upper West Region, acknowledged that dissatisfaction among Assembly Members played a role in the rejection of Mr Sayibu, as well as Mary Haruna, the nominee for DCE in the Nadowli Kaleo District.

He expressed hope that ongoing consultations with key stakeholders will help address underlying concerns and ensure a successful confirmation process in the upcoming vote.

Both the Wa East and Nadowli Kaleo District Assemblies are expected to hold special meetings on Monday, June 16, to decide the fate of the re-nominated candidates. The outcome will be closely watched as it could shape the pace of development and governance in the affected districts in the months ahead.
