Over 2,600 contesting for assembly and unit committee slots in the UWR

Over 2,600 individuals are competing for assembly and unit committee positions in the upcoming District Level Elections (DLEs), which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19, 2023, in the Upper West Region.

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, addressed journalists ahead of the elections and revealed that the candidates consist of 730 assembly member aspirants and 1,897 Unit Committee member candidates, making a total of 2,627 candidates.

The aspirants will be seeking election in 293 Electoral Areas across the region.

Dr Bin Salih mentioned “Our region boast of a commendable number of registered voters, standing at 496, 442. This indicates a strong and active participation in the democratic process, showcasing our citizens’ commitment to shaping their communities’ future through their votes.”

He encourages voters to exercise their civic duty by turning out to vote on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, and contribute to the growth and development of the Upper West Region.

“Let us exercise our democratic rights responsibly, ensuring that our voices shape the future of our communities. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the voter in the region is high,” he added.

Dr Bin Salih noted that the “Electoral Commission has diligently prepared for these elections, and I am delighted to inform you that preparations are far advanced.”

He urged all candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, respecting the electoral laws and fostering an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect throughout the election period.
