The National Population Council (NPC) in the Upper West Region has expressed worry over the imminent loss of the future of many young people in the region.
Speaking in an interview with Info Radio over the weekend on A Daa Nga Puo Yela, Mr Abu Salifu, the Upper West Regional Population Officer, said most young people in the region, especially Wa town, have had their futures slain by irresponsible behaviours such as substance abuse.
He feared society would not witness the much-talked-about future leaders if the youth did not change their ways.
He said, “If you look at Wa towship today, you will know that we are in sitting on a time bomb if we don’t change our behaviors. The people we depend on to lead us tomorrow is killing their tomorrow today.”
“Some people have no future because they have destroyed it through irresponsible behavior, excessive drinking, and lack of respect for elders.”
Mr. Salifu said that, aside from formal education, young people must venture into productive activities such as learning a trade.
He, therefore, expressed concerns that young people who move from rural areas to urban cities to learn a trade have always jumped into vices, veering from the purpose of their migration.
The Population Officer urged parents to ensure the proper upbringing of their children and advised controlled family sizes for better care.
