Non-adherence to ECOWAS protocols led to Guinea coup –Mornah

Bernard Angbataayela Mornah, a pan-Africanist and former National Chairman of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) has proclaimed that non adherence to ECOWAS protocols has led to the coup in Guinea.

Speaking on Info Radio Network, Mr Mornah said all members of the ECOWAS except three had agreed on two term mandates for presidents of member states, but a breach of this protocol has caused coups in Mali, Ivory Coast and recently Guinea.

Mr Mornah explained the circumstances that led to the toppling of the Guinean president, Mr Alpha Conde, as breach of the two-term protocol, rigging elections, arrest of opposition leader and others and economic hardships.

He blamed it all on the leadership of ECOWAS who sat aloof when Mr Conde started all these machinations.

The pan-Africanist averred that ECOWAS erred by first suspending and withdrawing the membership of Guinea without looking into the matter.

He affirmed that ECOWAS should have first probe the matter before Guinea’s possible suspension adding that, the act shows how confused ECOWAS is.

Mr Mornah however condemned the act of military governance and wished it for no country.

Nonetheless, he contended that the present steps by ECOWAS may likely not yield any positive results.
