The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Upper West Region has exceeded its 2025 membership registration target by 36 percent, marking a significant milestone in healthcare coverage expansion.
The Acting Upper West Regional Director, Tindogo Rashid Mohammed, announced the achievement during the Authority’s 2025 End-Year Performance Review Meeting. According to him, the regional office had set a target to register 80 percent of the estimated population of the Upper West Region but surpassed that goal by a wide margin.
He disclosed that active membership at the close of the year exceeded the region’s estimated population by 8 percent. Mr Mohammed attributed the figure partly to new entrants into the region who were enrolled under the Scheme. He emphasized the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that anyone who enters the region without an NHIS card leaves with valid health insurance coverage.
Mr. Mohammed described the year as intense and challenging but credited the success to strong collaboration and dedication by staff and partners, particularly the Department of Social Welfare.
He noted that the partnership helped identify and register vulnerable persons, including beneficiaries under the Ghana School Feeding Programme, free of charge. He stressed that expanding coverage among vulnerable groups remains central to the Scheme’s mandate.
To sustain and improve coverage, the Acting Director highlighted the deployment of digital solutions, including the My NHIS mobile application, which allows users to enroll or renew their membership using the Ghana Card without visiting NHIA offices. He also mentioned the *929# shortcode service for members without smartphones, enabling self-renewal through mobile money platforms.
Mr Mohammed encouraged residents to take advantage of the digital platforms and official communication channels, including the Authority’s website and social media pages, as part of efforts to leverage technology to deepen access to healthcare services across the region.
