MP Donates 460 Dual Desks to Schools in Lawra to Improve Learning Conditions

The Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede A. Ziedeng, has handed over 460 dual desks valued at GHC368,000 to the Lawra Municipal Education Directorate to support teaching and learning in basic schools across the municipality.

The intervention, according to the MP, forms part of his long-standing commitment to improving educational outcomes in the area.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Mr. Ziedeng emphasized that while infrastructure, books, and teachers are critical, a well-rounded education system must also include essential classroom furniture.

“This ceremony is to enable me to hand over 460 dual desks… so that some of our children would have basic furniture to aid teaching and learning,” he stated, noting that inadequate furniture remains a major challenge in several schools within the municipality.

He explained that although government provides furniture through the District Assemblies Common Fund, the scale of the deficit necessitated additional support. Mr. Ziedeng urged beneficiary schools to cultivate a strong maintenance culture to ensure the longevity of the desks.

“In Ghana, we have a problem of maintenance, and it is costing us a lot. I want you to maintain this furniture so that it lasts,” he advised.

The Lawra Municipal Director of Education, Francis Cudjoe, commended the MP for his sustained investment in education, highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects in senior high schools in Lawra, Brifo, and Eremon through the GETFund.

He also pointed to the MP’s support for candidates sitting for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which commenced on May 4.

According to Mr. Cudjoe, Mr. Ziedeng sponsored mock examinations for 994 candidates and provided logistical support, including fuel and snacks for teachers conducting weekend classes.

Additionally, the MP is providing hot meals for the BECE candidates and extending feeding support to final-year students of Brifo Senior High School preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Municipal Chief Executive, Cecilia Soyella, described the donation as timely, recounting the dire conditions in some schools. She revealed that shortly after assuming office in November, she was inundated with requests from head teachers seeking furniture.

Madam Soyella added that the assembly, in collaboration with the MP, acted swiftly to address the situation, leading to the procurement and distribution of the desks.

The desks are expected to be distributed to selected schools across the municipality, significantly improving classroom conditions and enhancing the learning experience for pupils.
