Media urged to promote free and fair elections in Ghana

The Special Aid to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Esq. has urged the media to help fight corruption as the 2024 general election is approaching.

 

Speaking at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Sungmaale FM in Wa, she encouraged the media to use their platforms as a means to expose any corrupt practices to promote a transparent and fair election in 2024.

According to her, the media continues to play a very crucial role in shaping the community.

“As we approach the 2024 election, the issue of political corruption continues to plaque our country. As a media we must take up the challenge to fight against pervasive problem of corruption.”


According to her, “political corruption is one of the key things that actually militate against our policy and pro-poor initiatives.”

She added that the media can influence public opinion and bring attention to the issues that matter most to the citizens.


Madam Bawa stressed that, even though freedom of the media in the President Akuffo-Addo and Bawumia-led government is intimidated, the media should not always forget their core mandate when it comes to the development of the country.


“We are however aware that under President Akuffo Addo and of course Mahamudu Bawumia, the press cannot be said to be as free as they were before.

You are the fourth estate of the realm; be responsible and hold the government and other powerful institutions accountable,” she stated.


She however explained that the 24-hour economy proposal of the NDC will help reduce the high rate of unemployment and underemployment in the country as well as improve the standard of living in the country.
