The Assembly member for the Mwal electoral area in Jirapa Municipality, Hon. George Dery, has raised concerns over the recent hardships faced by farmers in the region. He disclosed that farming activities over the past year have resulted in significant losses for local farmers due to declining market prices for agricultural produce.
Hon. Dery explained that the sharp drop in prices has left farmers unable to sell or adequately value their harvests, thereby hindering their ability to fund subsequent planting seasons. This economic strain threatens the sustainability of farming as a livelihood in the area.
The Assembly member highlighted that although registration processes for government initiatives such as the Feed Ghana project and the Nkoko Nkitinkitin policy have been completed, farmers have yet to receive any form of support or assistance from these programs. This lack of tangible aid has compounded their difficulties.
Hon. George Dery also pointed out the challenges posed by the unavailability of the Agricultural Extension Officer responsible for Duori Zone, which encompasses the Mwal electoral area. The officer’s frequent absence has hampered agricultural sensitization efforts, leaving farmers with limited access to vital information and guidance needed to improve productivity.
Hon. Dery called for urgent intervention from relevant authorities to address these issues, emphasizing the need for support mechanisms to bolster the resilience of local farmers and ensure sustainable agricultural development in the region.
