The Member of Parliament for Lawra Constituency, Mr Bede Ziedeng, has donated a cash amount of GH¢62,000.00 to support tertiary students in the constituency.
The first batch of 38 students in colleges of education received GH¢1,000.00 each.
The support was in fulfillment of his campaign promise in the run up to the 2020 general election.
During the campaign, Mr Ziedeng promised to set up an education fund, to be called “Lawra Constituency Educational Trust Fund” to provide financial assistant to brilliant but needy students in the constituency.
Addressing the press in Lawra on Monday to hand over the checks to the beneficiaries, Mr Ziedeng noted that he had received calls for support before the election which he saw the need to support them even before the establishment of the support fund.
“It is on account of this plea that I decide to use part of my Common Fund allocation to assist some of such students pending the establishment of the support fund”, the MP indicated.
According to him, the first category of students he supported were those in Colleges of Education, followed by students in Nursing Training Colleges, Technical and other orthodox universities then students in other institutions of learning.
Mr Ziedeng explained that students who were benefiting the government decentralized scholarship were excluded in his intervention to enable more students in the constituency to benefit.
The MP also indicated that he had given much consideration to gender in his support scheme as well as the need for him to spread the support to cover a lot of communities in the constituency.
“I have not under estimated the enormity of this task as I am aware that it is a huge one, but with time we shall be able to reach out to many more”, he added.
He thus entreated those students who had not yet received to exercise patience as he worked tirelessly to surmount all the challenges associated with the novel initiative to ensure they all benefited.
In addition, the MP said he had earlier spent GH¢11,500.00 on the Birifoh Senior High School when the girls dormitory of the school was guttered by fire.
Mr Ziedeng explained that improving education in the constituency was of top most priority to him as the MP for the area and would do everything within his remit to achieve that.
Mr Ziedeng also called for peaceful co-existence among the people in the municipality to help promote the development of the area.
