Private Schools In Wa Raise Concern Over Decline in Private Schools’ BECE Performance

The Wa Municipal Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), Mr. Mumuni Sulemana, has voiced concern over the disappointing performance of private schools in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Upper West Region. He highlighted a noticeable decline in pass rates and overall candidate performance, which has unsettled private school authorities.

Following the release of the 2026 BECE results, GNAPS petitioned the Ministry of Education, urging an investigation into factors contributing to the downturn. Despite these concerns, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied any unfair treatment of private schools during the examination.

Mr. Sulemana emphasized the significant investment private schools make in preparing their candidates and questioned why some students who excelled in mock exams failed to replicate similar results in the final BECE. He also called on WAEC to investigate allegations of examination malpractice involving private schools and to disclose findings if any evidence is found.
