Land Dispute Erupts in Wa-Nakori Over Alleged Unauthorized Development Near Wa Electoral Commission Office
A land dispute has erupted in Nakori, a suburb of Wa Municipality, involving community residents and a private developer over a parcel of land adjacent to the Wa Municipal office of the Electoral Commission . The disagreement surfaced Sunday morning when the developer was preparing to lay the foundation for a building project, only to be halted by community members who claimed the land was not for private development.
According to Mr. Abdulai Ibrahim, Unit Committee Chairman for the Nakori-Chansa Electoral Area, the land in question was allocated to the Wa Municipal Assembly several years ago and remains under its jurisdiction. Ibrahim explained that the parcel, which encompasses more than 20 plots, has seen its size diminish over time due to various development activities, some of which the community claims were unauthorized.
“When we inquired about these developments, we were told they were not projects initiated by the Assembly,” Ibrahim said. He added that the Wa Municipal Office of the Electoral Commission was constructed on part of the land as part of the Assembly's commitment to the community and to secure the parcel.
The community’s concerns escalated when the committee learned that the private developer had not secured ownership or approval from the Assembly. Consequently, the committee engaged the developer and requested that work be suspended until the ownership and status of the land could be clarified with the Assembly.
Mr. Adams Salifu, a local landlord, reaffirmed that the land was allocated to the Wa Municipal Assembly and was still under that designation. “Our efforts to halt this development are aimed at protecting the land and maintaining the understanding between the community and the Assembly,” Salifu stated. He warned against the unauthorised sale or transfer of communal lands, emphasizing that the parcel was entrusted to the Assembly by the community.
As the dispute unfolds, Info Radio is actively seeking to hear from the private developer and the Wa Municipal Assembly for their official positions. Meanwhile, sources close to the community have alleged that some individuals may have been involved in the purported sale or allocation of parts of the land claims that have yet to be independently verified.
