GNAPS Wa Municipal Holds Maiden Inter-Schools Quiz

ree

The Wa Municipal branch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has successfully organized its maiden inter-schools quiz competition.

The quiz is aimed at improving academic performance among private basic schools in the municipality.

Speaking at the event, the Wa Municipal Chairman of GNAPS, Mr. Sulemana Mumuni, said the quiz was introduced to challenge both teachers and students to go beyond their usual teaching and learning routines.

According to him, the competition is designed to encourage the effective use of past examination questions as a key learning tool.

Mr. Mumuni explained that the quiz focuses on four core subject areas: Social Studies, English Language, Integrated Science, and Mathematics. He noted that teachers are being encouraged to teach candidates using past questions spanning from 1990 to 2025, while the current knockout stages of the competition are based on questions from 2017 to 2025.

He said the initiative would help students become familiar with examination formats, boost their confidence, and reduce fear associated with external examinations.

“Even if questions are not repeated, they usually come in the same format. When students are exposed to this, they gain confidence and are better prepared for their exams,” he stated.

Out of the 50 private schools under GNAPS in the Wa Municipality, 15 schools participated in the maiden quiz. The participating schools were grouped into five groups, with three schools in each group. Winners from each group will automatically qualify for the grand finale, scheduled for December 13.

Mr. Mumuni disclosed that the quiz competition is expected to become an annual event and will be organized ahead of candidates’ Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). He added that another quiz session is planned for January to further prepare candidates before they sit for their examinations in May.

Beyond the quiz competition, the GNAPS Chairman outlined other initiatives under the association’s action plan. These include the introduction of a Best Teacher Award for private schools, where each school will nominate its best teacher for recognition by the association.

He also announced plans to organize common mock examinations for all private schools in the municipality. The mock exams, he said, will be conducted under strict examination conditions at a neutral venue, with external invigilators and security personnel, to serve as a dress rehearsal for the BECE.

Mr. Mumuni emphasized that private education should not only focus on profit-making but also contribute meaningfully to societal development. He commended government support for private schools and called for the expansion of such support to other capable and competent private institutions.

The maiden inter-schools quiz marks a significant step by GNAPS Wa Municipal towards improving teaching standards and academic outcomes in private schools within the municipality.
