The former assemblyman for Dupari Electoral Area in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region, Ahmed Nurideen Ajansumah has petitioned the Overlord of the Wala Traditional Council, Naa Fuseini Pelpuo IV and other stakeholders in the Upper West Region over what he claims to illegal payments in National Health Insurance Authority accredited healthcare facilities in the region.
In his petition dated April 3, 2024, Mr Ajansumah noted that “it has now become a common knowledge to everybody in this region that there has been a rising issue of illegal payments within the various NHIA credentialed health facilities in the municipality, which is seriously disrupting the operations of the scheme.”

“Despite several efforts made by the Authority in addressing the phenomenon, illegal payments continue to be a significant challenge that impacts negatively on the healthcare services provided to the community members,” he added.
According to him, the NHIA has been diligent in the payments of claims, having paid all lower-tier facilities up to December 2023 and upper-tier facilities up to October 2023. He says the Authority have plans to settle the rest of the claims for 2024.
Mr Ajansumah noted that the persistence of illegal payment continues to pose a huge threat to the sustainability of the scheme and the well-being of the people it serves.
“I humbly request your assistance and intervention in an addressing this critical issue. Your influence and support as the esteemed Overlord of the Waala Traditional Kingdom hold significant weight, and your involvement could greatly contribute to the eradication of illegal payments in our health facilities,” he added.
