Farmer appeals for government support to increase food production

The increasing cost of agricultural inputs, especially fertilizers, is having a significant impact on food production.

The General Manager of Vision Farms in the Upper West Region, Mr Alhassan Bafaara Ibrahim, has appealed for government intervention to enable farmers in the country to increase crop production.

The request was made during an interview with Info Radio, following a one-day field demonstration by OCP Ghana at Vision Farms.

Over 100 farmers from Nator-Duori, Busa, Sankana, Takpo, and Changu were invited to the demonstration, where OCP presented their new effective NPS fertilizer for legumes and cereals.

“We bought fertilizer at GH₵460.00 per bag this year. You will spend out GH₵2,500.00 to farm one acre of maize and if you don’t get about seven or more bags, you will not make any profit,” Mr Bafaara stated.

He revealed that he reduced his farm size from 800 to 200 this year due to high fertilizer costs.

“Last two years we cultivated about 800 with our farmers but this year we did only 200 because of the high cost of fertilizer.”
