Residents of Wuokora in the Kuuchileyiri electoral area are grappling with a mounting water crisis following the suspension of their self-initiated dam project, hindered primarily by a lack of funds and the onset of rains. During a recent community gathering with Info Radio, residents voiced concerns over the stalled construction, which was aimed at providing reliable drinking water for both humans and livestock.

The community had collectively contributed resources—funds from residents within Wuokora and those outside—to finance the dam’s construction, intending to support local livelihoods and ensure water security. However, the project has come to a halt after the depletion of allocated funds, leaving residents without a dependable water source.

Naa Dramani Polbo, the chief of Wuokora, the chief of Wuokuraa speaking to Info Radio explained that the project’s expenses included a transportation cost of 4,000 Ghana cedis for bringing in a bulldozer, covering both arrival and departure. Additionally, daily operational charges totaled 7,500 Ghana cedis, covering the use of machinery and labor over four days. The community, having exhausted their financial resources for these expenses, now faces a temporary setback.

Despite the setback, the chief expressed optimism, stating that the community intends to resume work once the rainy season subsides, which has currently hampered progress. He also noted that there remains a remaining balance of 5,000 Ghana cedis with the hired contractor, which will be used to complete the project.

The residents have appealed to local authorities and government officials to assist in securing additional funding or resources to finish the dam, emphasizing the urgent need for a sustainable water source to support their livelihoods and well-being. The community’s situation underscores the pressing challenge faced by many rural communities in securing essential infrastructure through self-initiatives amidst limited financial support.
