Lawra Municipal Hospital Receives GH¢100,000 Medical Consumables from Member of Parliament

The Lawra Municipal Hospital has received medical consumables worth GH¢100,000 from the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede Anwataazumo. Ziedeng, following an appeal by the hospital's management over severe shortages of essential supplies caused by financial and operational challenges.

The donation, made during a ceremony at the hospital on August 3, 2026, is expected to ease the facility's immediate burden and improve healthcare delivery by ensuring the continuous availability of critical medical consumables.

The Medical Superintendent of the Lawra Municipal Hospital, Dr. Musah Ziblila, revealed that the facility has been grappling with poor revenue generation due to low Out-Patient Department (OPD) attendance, leaving it unable to meet its operational obligations.

According to him, the situation resulted in persistent shortages of essential consumables, including examination gloves, syringes, needles and laboratory reagents, after suppliers refused to extend further credit because of outstanding debts accumulated by the hospital.

He added that the hospital has also struggled to pay casual workers, whose services are crucial to clinical operations, while high maintenance costs associated with aging infrastructure have further strained the facility's limited resources.

Dr. Ziblila said management, about three months ago, appealed to the Lawra MP for assistance to procure essential non-drug consumables needed to sustain critical healthcare services. "Today, that appeal has become a reality," he said.

He explained that the donation would restore the uninterrupted supply of essential consumables, improve patient confidence and encourage more people to seek healthcare at the facility.

The intervention, he noted, would also enable management to redirect funds that would otherwise have been spent on purchasing consumables to other pressing needs, including settling outstanding debts and paying casual workers.

Dr. Ziblila appealed to hospital staff to use the donated items responsibly, stressing the need for proper accountability to ensure they benefit patients.

Responding to the appeal, the Member of Parliament, Bede Ziedeng, said he considered it necessary to support the hospital because of the critical role healthcare plays in the wellbeing of the people.

He recalled that the Medical Superintendent approached him earlier this year with concerns that the hospital could no longer provide some essential services due to shortages of medical consumables.

"When the Medical Superintendent approached me with this request concerning health, I decided to provide some support," he said.

The MP noted that the donation fulfilled the promise he made to the hospital following that appeal. He also highlighted previous interventions he had undertaken to strengthen healthcare delivery at the facility, including the donation of a projector valued at about GH¢8,000 and financial support of approximately GH¢62,000 towards the refurbishment of the hospital's theatre.

According to him, work on the theatre is progressing steadily and, once completed, will significantly improve surgical services at the hospital. The latest donation comprises examination gloves, syringes and needles, gauze, laboratory reagents, infusion-giving sets, sutures and detergents.

The Lawra Municipal Director of Health Services, Phoebe Balagumyetime, described the intervention as timely, noting that the availability of essential consumables is critical to effective healthcare delivery.

She commended the MP for complementing the ongoing refurbishment of the hospital's theatre, saying the interventions demonstrate his commitment to strengthening the municipality's health system.

She expressed optimism that the partnership between health authorities and the MP would continue, urging regular engagement to address challenges confronting healthcare delivery across the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Lawra, Cecilia Soyelle Nuratu also reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

She disclosed that the abandoned Babile Polyclinic maternity ward had been captured under the Assembly's legacy projects and awarded on contract for completion.

She further announced that construction of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Eremon has commenced using the Assembly's 10 per cent allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund.

The MCE added that discussions are underway with the appropriate authorities to secure an ambulance for the Lawra Municipal Hospital to strengthen emergency referrals within the municipality.
